IdeaStorm: Ideas in Action

  • IdeaStorm Fortnightly Recap 10-3-08

We've had 2 cool (IMHO) announcements in the last few weeks.  Almost a month ago, we announced the mini computer.  Now, we're announcing the mini projector!  This handy dandy little device will let you easily carry a projector in your bag to connect and project wherever you go.  Check out this post on Direct2Dell for a video to learn more.   Badblood increases his ideas Implemented or Partially Implemented to 12 now with this one: Invest in mini-projectors!

As part of our ongoing strategy to be the greenest technology company, we have also announced plans to transition to energy efficient LED displays over the next 12 months.  Yardsale's idea to switch to LED monitors has grown to over 11,000 points and I'm happy to see it will be implemented as we move forward.  Also note, the mini projector uses an LED as well.

You also may have noticed I have been doing a little Category "clean-up" as we prepare to upgrade our site at the end of the month.  Thanks to winoffice for the reminder to Add a "Studio products" category.  I added that one, consolidated Operating Systems - Multi-boot into Operating Systems, removed Healthcare and changed Simplify IT to Enterprise.  I also added a Women Interest category to support our efforts with our Cyber Sisterhood blog.  If you have other suggestions for category changes, please add that comment here or in the Storm Room.

I'll be back in a few weeks with more Idea updates and more info on our upcoming site changes.

  • IdeaStorm Fortnightly Recap 9-19-08

For those who missed it, I broke my 2 week (or fortnightly) update cycle last week with a post to mark our 10,000th idea.  In that post, I commented on the fact we have implemented or partially implemented 2% of the ideas.  And this week, winoffice posted the idea that Dell, you need to implement more than 2% of ideas.  We also had an idea from dika to Review all Ideas.   Last month, winoffice also posted the increasingly popular idea: When you choose not to implement an idea, explain why.  And I know there are even more similar ideas out there…

I’d like to take this opportunity to share some insights on how the ideas from IdeaStorm are reviewed across the company.  First of all, we have a central Community and Conversations team with a very diverse background of experience and knowledge.  This team works across the blogs, forums and IdeaStorm.  Jackie_c is the full time IdeaStorm moderator, but you will see other members of this team on IdeaStorm engaging in the conversations, comments and updates.

While every Dell employee obviously has access to IdeaStorm, we have varying degrees of engagement on the site across the different departments – Product Group, Online, Retail, Marketing, Linux, etc.  Therefore, we use both an information pull and an information push system.  Some teams are regularly reviewing ideas that pertain to their business unit via formal and informal processes.  The central team, us, also push the information and ideas that pertain to specific areas of the business.  We manage these ideas on the backend of the site to provide appropriate ideas to the appropriate business unit.

To answer the some of the most recent pressing questions:

    ·         “Is every idea reviewed?”  The answer is yes.  Is it reviewed at the right time, by the right person?  Well, we’re working on that and getting better all the time.

    ·         “Will every idea get a status tag?”  The answer to this remains no.  It is not efficient for us to do this.

    ·         “Will we begin implementing more than 2% of the ideas?”  I believe so.  The company focus on innovation and direct customer feedback, in conjunction with the idea management processes we have and are continuously improving, will make this happen.

    ·         “Will we tell you why we chose to do or not do something?”  Not all the time.  We aim to be as transparent as possible, when and where it makes sense.  But, do remember it would not be wise competitively to share all of our corporate strategy online.

In my last update, I also referenced a site upgrade coming at the end of October.  These changes will affect both your user experience as well as the idea management process.  I personally have high confidence that these enhancements will help us continue to increase our Dell employee engagement on IdeaStorm, and therefore, improve on our ability to meet your request for more information from us and how we use your ideas.  Keep ‘em coming!

  • Wow - That's A LOT of Ideas!!!

    image

We recently hit a historic mark on IdeaStorm - 10,000 ideas!  I want to take a moment first and foremost to thank the entire community for all the input - ideas, votes, comments and conversations!  We launched this site to provide a public avenue for people to give us their ideas and vote on what Dell should be doing. Obviously, you have a lot of input for us and we absolutely appreciate it! Let’s start by taking a little trip down memory lane…

    IdeaStorm History:

And a few fun facts and tidbits:

And I would be remiss if I didn’t highlight some of the dedicated user community! As many of you know, you can view the top contributors here. But did you also know these facts:

    • jmxz has submitted the most ideas at 264
    • robinjfisher submitted only 1 idea and still has the 3rd highest ranking
    • phubert has provided the most commentary with 4,433 comments
    • jervis961 has voted on the most ideas by voting on everything except 14 ideas
    • sugarbear has been one of our most active (and positive!) contributors across all Dell community properties including IdeaStorm, Dell Community Forum, and many of the Blogs

So, what does this all mean and what’s next?

As I quoted above, we have implemented 200 ideas or 2%. Is this good or bad? My opinion is it’s good, but not great. We did not set goals on how many ideas we expected to receive from the community on this site, nor how many we thought would be feasible to implement. As a company, we believe in listening to our customers and IdeaStorm has enabled thousands of employees across Dell to do just that in their every day work. This helps all of us prioritize and validate the work we do. We have also done things we never expected to do just because of the feedback on IdeaStorm – offer Linux and keep XP around for as long as we have – just to name a few.

As requested by many ideas, we are planning to upgrade IdeaStorm with a new look and feel as well as some new features and functionality towards the end of October. You will be hearing more from me on that over the next couple of months…

And finally, as Michael Dell has said in the past, “A company this size is not going to be about a couple of people coming up with ideas. It’s going to be about millions of people and harnessing the power of those ideas.” So as long as people are here giving us ideas and voting on them, we will be here to listen, engage and respond.

    Thank you!

  • IdeaStorm Fortnightly Recap 9-5-08

In the last 2 weeks, we’ve had 2 major product announcements: the new Vostro products for emerging markets and the much anticipated launch of the Inspiron Mini. I was also delinquent in updating the status of ideas around the new Precision Mobile Workstations that launched in conjunction with the Latitude a few weeks ago, so I have included those here as well!

    Vostro:

Let’s look first at ideas related to the new Vostro. These systems are being made primarily for emerging markets in BRIC countries. There are 2 desktops and 2 laptops models including a 14.1” and a 15.6” screen. We have updated the idea to Offer a 14.1" Vostro again!! to Partially Implemented. It is being offered in many countries, but unfortunately, much to winoffice’s dismay, only the 15.6” will be available in the US. Both of the laptop products also come with non-glare displays as suggested by anonym. Also, these systems will be available with Linux.

    Inspiron 910:

And now for the Mini… As announced yesterday on Your Blog, we have officially released the Inspiron Mini. True to Dell’s practice, we did not release any detailed information prior to the official product launch, although many of you asked and discussed it on mostlyharmless22’s post Have more respect for your Inspiron Mini customers!

We did, however, listen to your ideas about the product! First and foremost, we followed jervis961’s highly rated suggestion that we Don't put the Dell logo upside down on the Mini Inspiron. We can also put to rest the debate on the name that was happening on badblood’s idea for "Dell E" Find a new name for your new computer... But the most detailed description of the Mini that was Implemented came from okroger104 to Design a UMPC to counter HP's mini-note 2133. Two other ideas that I updated to Partially Implemented are new mini laptop and True Inspiron Mini.

    Precision:

My last Ideas in Action update focused quite a bit on the new Latitude launch. In doing so, I neglected to include the many ideas that were incorporated into the new Precision Mobile Workstation design. mano_g from the Precision Product Marketing team has joined us to follow through with some commentary and status changes on many of those ideas. Below is a list of some of the ideas that were incorporated into the recent product launch. Expect even more to be updated by early next week.

Feel free to drop by one of these ideas if you have questions for Mano. Also note with the Precision as well as other products, we are always iterating with the planning process. If one of your ideas is not incorporated into the recent round of product releases, keep the ideas and votes coming and we’ll take them under consideration for the next series of products.

  • IdeaStorm Fortnightly Recap 8-22-08

It’s been a busy couple of weeks since my last update. As promised, I’ll be back every 2 weeks to give an overall update. And as penguisa from Australia informed me, a fortnight is a more appropriate term than biweekly when referring to every 2 weeks. So here is your Fortnightly recap…

    The New Latitude:

The biggest news last week was definitely all about the launch of the new Latitude notebooks. If you haven’t seen or heard the buzz (or even if you have!), please read on for the recap.

It all started with a live global event held in Austin, San Francisco, and London on August 12th. As requested by jervis961 to Post a video of your Global Mobility Event, you can register and then launch an archived version of the event here. Also available are the slides from the presentations of Andy Lark (my boss) and Jeff Clarke (Mr. Latitude). Of course, my absolute FAVORITE slide was Jeff’s third one that proudly announced how the new Latitude came to be:

    • 1 million+ human hours of work in 6 countries
    • 100s of ideas at IdeaStorm
    • 3,200 prototype test units
    • 1,000+ user tests
    • 4,000+ customers involved

In his presentation, Jeff remarked many times that a key piece of the design input came from our IdeaStorm community. Here are some of the ideas that helped influence the design and features of our new Latitudes (now with status updates!):

And while the idea for Power input via USB did not get implemented, I did put a comment about the new Latitude feature of USB PowerShare, which allows users to charge mobile devices via the Latitude's USB ports, even when the system is powered down. Very cool!

And lastly today for Latitude, there have been many follow on ideas since the launch such as - 1680x1050 for new Latitude E 15.4 inches, Offer ATI video cards on the new E-series Latitudes, Vista upgrades for Latitude E should cost less. Keep those ideas and votes coming!

    Digital Nomads:

In conjunction with the Latitude launch, Dell also unveiled a new community site called DigitalNomads.com. What in the world is a Digital Nomad you ask?? I think Bruce Eric Anderson’s initial post explains it best. The aim of the site is to foster conversations about the technology trends that enable those who wish to be connected -- whenever and wherever.

In honor of the Digital Nomads site, we have added a new category to IdeaStorm. In addition to being voted on in IdeaStorm, we will be feeding the new ideas via RSS onto the Digital Nomads site. Check out krowland’s idea for his RV Lifestyle.

    Small Biz Advice:

In my last update, I talked about kara_k sticking with her IdeaStorm roots and helping to get some ideas implemented specific to the needs of Small Businesses. Well, she obviously can’t get enough and came back to IdeaStorm this week to get some feedback from the community. Specifically, she wanted to know what advice Small Business Owners would ask Michael Dell, if given the chance. She posted the top 10 questions in the Small Business category on IdeaStorm for people to vote on. Voting ends today at 5:00 CST, so make sure you get your votes in, if you haven’t already! And of course, check back to the Small Business blog soon to see a vlog of Michael’s responses to the top five questions.

    Linux:

As always, john_h is around talking with our avid Linux community. Here are a couple of the ideas where he has joined the conversations with his commentary.

I’ll be back here in a fortnight!

  • IdeaStorm Bi-Weekly Recap 8-8-08

First things first… It’s been just over 3 weeks since my first update. I intended to get back here and keep the flow of information going on a regular basis, but alas, time got away from me. So as I told brokencrystal in his request for a schedule for “Ideas in Action” earlier this week, I will go on the record to say the Ideas in Action updates will now be posted on a bi-weekly basis. I may sneak some in between when we have exciting things to share, but you can at least count on having an update every other Friday, starting today. Now onto the good stuff…

    IdeaStorm updates:

First of all, we added a “Top ideas” tab to the front page of IdeaStorm based on the idea to organize ideas by popularity from badblood. This tab will show you the ideas sorted from the highest all time votes to the lowest. As of right now, our >9,650 ideas range in score from 152,150 all the way down to -2,120. Not surprisingly, Pre-Installed Linux is at the top of the list and at the bottom is the losing design from our lightning rod to choose the XPS clear panel concept you like best.

We also just added the functionality to track comments - by idea - via an RSS feed. Check out the RSS icon at the bottom of an idea and let me know what you think.

    clip_image002track comments for this idea

    Studio Hybrid:

Dell revealed its smallest and greenest PC - the Studio Hybrid - last week on Your Blog. This snazzy little guy also generated some debates and conversations in our own Storm Room. I personally think it is going to be a great addition to my kitchen desk! And I’m happy to say this new system implements at least these three related ideas:

    Color

    Computers made with bamboo

Produce Good Value "Green" Desktops & Laptops

    Touchscreens:

I don’t have any specific updates on touschreens beyond what I said in my last Ideas in Action post. However, roy_s from our R&D team joined in the IdeaStorm conversation on the idea to Make Touch Screens Optional on all Computers . Check out what he had to stay and definitely stay tuned for more to come on that topic.

    Small Business:

IdeaStorm’s very own kara_k has moved on to be our Small Business Community Manager but is still keeping IdeaStorm close to her heart. She has helped to follow through and Partially Implement the ideas for Why are business computers so boring and Vostro Should have XPS options plus Blu Ray. Thanks Kara!

    Ubuntu:

And last for now – but CERTAINLY not least – here’s a few for our Linux fans. Hopefully, you have already seen Daniel’s Direct2Dell post: Dell XPS 1530n and Studio 15n Now Available with Ubuntu 8.04.

This matches at least 4 ideas on IdeaStorm…

    Ubuntu LAPTOP

Include nvidia and ati video cards in ubuntu laptops and desktops

    Dell and Ubuntu

New Ubuntu Laptop With "see below"

Whew – that’s it for now. Time to go and enjoy the Olympics! I’ll be back here on the 22nd, if not before.

  • IdeaStorm Recap 7-17-08

First of all, I wanted to give an update on the IdeaStorm team at Dell and introduce myself.  As many of you already know, Dawn_L has decided to move on from Dell to pursue a new opportunityKara_K is also moving on, but we are happy that she is staying both at Dell and on our team to be the Small Business online community manager.  Jackie_C will continue to be our IdeaStorm admin (thank you Jackie!!!).  You also may or may not know that we also have a larger extended community team that participates in conversations across the Dell Blogs, Dell Forums, IdeaStorm, Twitter, and the web in general.  You can read more about everyone here on our team bio page.

That leaves me with the official title of "IdeaStorm Manager."  I'm not a big fan of titles as you can read in my bio since I will respond to almost anything.  I am really excited to take on the task of making sure your suggestions get in front of all the right people at Dell.  I have been at Dell for over nine years and working in this "Community world" for the last two.  Everything I have done thus far has been pretty much in the back office, so you haven't seen much of me online. But, I'm happy to start now and look forward to getting to know everyone.  Feel free to come and chat with me in the Storm Room or connect with me on Twitter @VidaK

I also wanted to make sure I got this post out so I could to respond to badblood's idea for an update on the IdeaStorm team.  You'll see this one change to Implemented shortly after this post!  You'll be hearing more from me in the coming weeks, but getting down to business, here are the updates I can share right now....

    People:

It's been a busy month with over 1000 new registered users!  Welcome to roderic8, tramainejones28, ksnipersixfour, whackatak, dermatologist, and pepperoni to name a few.

    Updates:

jlp2cool's idea for a lap pad was updated to Already Offered - so check it out.

We Partially Implemented jervis961's idea for the Dell community site based on the changes recently made to the www.dell.com home page.  If you haven't paid attention lately - have a look at the new face of Dell.

And last for now, but definitely not least, you may have read about Dell's new multi-touch functionality being added to the Latitude XT (aka Tablet PC).  We've had quite a few ideas around this concept that have been updated to Partially Implemented since it is not available on every display, but you can have the option if you buy a tablet or upgrade if you already own one.

Stay tuned for more updates as I get caught up!

  • Weekly Recap 7-2-08

Thanks for everyone's patience with the challenges we have had with the ideas in action page.  Here is the latest on IdeaStorm!

    People:

We have had a bunch of new ideas and a crew of new people visiting the site.  Welcome to meand3ts, n64bomb, oligarch, voice99, and bobinlou.  I was especially excited by the ideas, comments and votes by new user ringas85.  This week we were happy to see new members from the Steve Harvey show!  A special hello to popz2049 and candacemichelle_1, we look forward to hearing all you ideas!

    Ideas:

Several ideas continue to drive a lot of conversation from our community. For the past month our members have discussed why Dell should ship products with no more plastic wrap. Also, ideas on optical mice and GPU upgrades have gotten many IdeaStormers talking.

    Updates:

Several new things to update you all on:  First, I am sure you saw the recent posts about the new Studio series of laptops that will fit nicely into the lineup between the Inspiron and the XPS laptops.  As we have before, we continue to include the features you tell us are important including the low profile design, colors, fingerprint reader, backlit keyboard and the new Dell Dock.  Ok, so that stuff is cool... but myself... I am dying to try the new video chat.  Would love to have that for my friends!  If anyone has tried it... please share!

  • Your Tech Team – Dedicated Support Teams

We're excited to share a new service offering beginning today called "Your Tech Team".  This offering has a couple of key components that the IdeaStorm community has overwhelmingly asked for: one contact point for all your needs, Americas-based support and faster response times. Your Tech Team provides household support by an advanced support team in North America for one year. Customer feedback from the Lightning Rod back in May of last year, the NYC area pilot, and several other service improvement ideas from IdeaStorm directly influenced what this service will include.

For more details, see the post from Laura Bosworth on Direct2Dell.

Link back to the idea: Hello Again - Dedicated Teams

Here are just a few of the 50+ other related ideas:

  • (PRODUCT) RED

Dell is committed to global citizenship. As an extension of this commitment, we are excited to share Dell's participation in (PRODUCT) RED, thanks in part to the idea smotchberry submitted back in February of last year. Smotchberry has become the first IdeaStorm community member to have two Ideas in Action (first was Carbon Neutral). These ideas help us to continue to contribute both to environment and the health needs of our world.

Beginning today when you purchase any of Dell's (PRODUCT) RED branded products you contribute to the Global Fund. Check out Lionel's post for more details on how you can contribute with Dell. This seemingly simple idea is a great way for Dell to help make a big impact on the fight against AIDS in Africa.

Since the Global Fund provides medications that literally turn around peoples' lives and health, Dell is pleased to make a donation to the Global Fund in smotchberry's name. This donation will provide almost one year of treatment for someone living with AIDS in Africa.

Keep those great ideas coming and see how Dell and customers can team up to make a difference!

Link back to the idea:  Product Red

Update 6-27-08: Starting today, you now have more ways to help the Global Fund fight AIDS in Africa with Dell and (RED). After the initial launch of Dell's (PRODUCT) RED offerings, we got a lot of feedback from the IdeaStorm community about how we could allow more customers the opportunity to contribute.  Thanks to programatix, jaylus12 and the rest of our IdeaStormers for providing some great feedback on how we could improve PRODUCT (RED). Keep up the great ideas!

Link back to the ideas:Make PRODUCT RED as an item in system configuration ; DELL shouldn't charge $150 more for their (PRODUCT)RED model
