Linux Update: Ubuntu 7.10 and Built-In DVD playback

Many people don't realize how young our consumer Linux client program is...we started in May this year. I've been along for the ride every step of the way - from the time we heard loud and clear that there was a need not being met by any other major PC manufacturer at the time. What started as a grass roots campaign in the Linux community was embraced by a small but dedicated team inside Dell. I can tell you that we worked fast to pull together a solution and went way outside of several processes to make Ubuntu on consumer systems a reality.  In fact, our lead lead engineer said in a message to employees, "...we really broke all the rules...so I'll apologize to Dell for that."

I wanted to give a quick recap on the continued progress we've made with Linux on our desktops and notebooks:

Ultimately our program is about listening and delivering customer choice. Today we offer Ubuntu in the US, UK, France and Germany. For customers in other countries interested in Ubuntu, we hear you and ask you to stay tuned. As with the regular cadence of OS improvements, Dell is working on bringing Ubuntu to more markets over time. In the meantime, tell your friends in the existing markets to buy a system now. The more we sell, the sooner we can expand the program.

While our program is in early stages, we remain committed to creating a compelling experience for the mainstream market.

Today, we're adding Ubuntu 7.10 (a.k.a Gutsy Gibbon) to the Dell Consumer Linux line-up for customers in the United States.  It will also be available on the Inspiron 530 in England, France, and Germany later this week.

Visit www.dell.com/ubuntu to order Inspiron 530 desktop or Inspiron 1420 notebook PCs with Ubuntu 7.10 pre-installed. We believe Ubuntu 7.10 is a solid step forward for both Linux enthusiasts as well as the mainstream consumer market.

One of the key requests from customers interested in Linux is the ability to watch their favorite DVD movies. (See idea Preinstalled  Linux must play commercial DVDs from IdeaStorm user jonmca... but we ended up taking some advice from jmxz to use LinDVD). We totally agree and that's why we now include built-in DVD movie playback with all Ubuntu 7.10 systems. The experience we wanted is simple — when you put a movie in, it plays. It is easy enough for a child and an example of the steps we are taking to make Ubuntu as enjoyable as possible.

With an impressive level of consistency, the Ubuntu OS is updated every 6 months. There's lots of new features in version 7.10. While there are too many to highlight here, some of my favorites include:

  • Cool 3-D visual effects that make your system fun to use
  • An easier desktop search engine to find documents or applications,
  • Ability to quickly switch between users and easily share a system with family members
  • Pre-installation of Flash for a better web experience (Dell added this by the way)
  • Improved recovery options with a full factory restore from hard drive and the ability to burn the system-specific recovery image to DVD media right from the user's desktop (Dell-developed as well)

Why did it take a several weeks for Dell to get Ubuntu 7.10 in our factory? The answer is simple. With any operating system, we take "gold" code and take the time to do extensive testing on our systems to make sure that customers have as few issues as possible.

Make sure you check out our discussion with Mark Shuttleworth, CEO and Founder of Ubuntu. Also, for those of you looking to get a deeper technical dive into Ubuntu 7.10, be sure to check out the blog post from our chief Linux engineer that focuses on desktops and notebooks.

Thanks and have a happy holiday -- I'll definitely be using DVD playback on an Inspiron 1420 to entertain my beautiful four-yearold daughter on our five-hour flight to visit the in-laws! :)

Why is Dell still not offering any Linux systems at all (desktop, laptop, etc) in Canada?

Great. DVD playback from a major pc vendor.

Go beyond guys.

That's nice but does the DVD playback works with encrypted DVDs? I know there's a lot of legal issues regarding some codecs and Linux, I just want to know how did Dell sort that out.

Great to hear from Mark and Dell on this - this combined effort is starting to for a pretty compelling argument for a consumer to choose Linux, and for it to work.

I look forward to Ubuntu becoming available on cutting edge systems like the XPS1330.

Good to hear that Ubuntu and Dell is growing and offering better systems. Well done.

Multimedia, simple install/removal of apps/programs from any ISV, and hardware compatiblity  (eg web cams, scanners, phones etc) : solve these three and Ubuntu/Linux will be mainstream.

And please, bring Ubuntu Dell to Australia.

Excellent work folks.

Thank you for the very informative post and video.  The video was really interesting to watch.

I understand that you need to do extensive testing before releasing an operating system to consumers, but with the Ubuntu Alpha/Beta cycle, there shouldn't be much of a problem shipping a new release within a week or so.

I am currently using Hardy Heron Alpha 1 without any issues.  There were a few minor bugs, but this is only Alpha 1!  By the final release, or even the last few betas, I expect to be able to install Hardy flawlessly on any supported system, so I'm a bit confused as to what the Dell Linux team was working on for a month after the release of Gutsy.

It's great that they're finally shipping.  I'll buy one as soon as I can get Ubuntu preinstalled on a Vostro with an AMD/ATI video card.  Hopefully that's soon :)

Weeber: in a comment you ask 'That's nice but does the DVD playback works with encrypted DVDs? I know there's a lot of legal issues regarding some codecs and Linux, I just want to know how did Dell sort that out.'

Yes, InterVideo (now whomever bought them) worked with all the licensing bodies (Dolby, DVD Consortium, MPEG-LA, etc) to make sure LinDVD had all the appropriate licenses, passed Dolby tests, etc.

Steve said:
Congrats on adding this functionality!

@Weeber: THey are using Lindvd. Lindvd is made by the same people that make windvd. Of course it supports encrypted dvd disks.

i'v installed ubuntu lots of times, and looked for the drivers myself on my desktops.but now
i've just ordered a Inspiron 1520 with the 256MB NVIDIATM GeForceTM Go 7900 GS Graphics Card ( i'm in india and ubuntu dell machines are not available here)
and was wondering if i could download a dell linux distro and instal it myself.

Is there a 7.10 upgrade for existing E1505n owners (like myself)?  Of course, I've already installed the "generic" version of 7.10, but it'd be nice to have the Dell-approved code, including, ahem, legal DVD playback...

Great going! However, Ubuntu is still hard to find on the Dell website. You basically have to know what you're looking for in order to find it. Ubuntu is not easily discoverable. Why is that?

I am not sure if Dell is doing itself a favor when their people talk about the European options like they are a three country offering. Due to the Eurpean Union being a single market quite like the United States, the Dell/Ubuntu machines are available to customers all over the EU, in three localizations (English, French, German), not just to customers in UK, France and Germany.

"... tell your friends in the existing markets to buy a system now. The more we sell, the sooner we can expand the program."

Well, it's sad that Dell does not sell its top notch laptops, like 1520 and 1720, with Ubuntu in Europe. No friend of mine would buy a bottom-spec laptop like the 6400n (the only dell laptop with ubuntu on it), whatever the O.S. in it, nor would I. We buy a laptop for the hardware in it, not the software.

So, I do not see you expanding your program unless you add decent laptop hardware offerings together with Ubuntu. I must say to you that I bought a 1720 here in UK, which comes with Vista. I wiped vista (which I would never use anyway) and installed ubuntu 7.10 for good, however I doubt my purchase would help your linux program, since unfortunately in the statistics it will be counted as a Vista purchase: much as I would have preferred to buy a dell laptop with ubuntu, I don't want to buy any brick, I want a decent laptop with my ubuntu, which the 1720 fulfills. All my friends think the same.

So, get real: put ubuntu in 1720 and 1520, or else see you ubuntu numbers to wither to nothing. Your ubuntu team has already lost my purchase, and probably all my friends' as well.

where exactly do we download ubuntu 7.10 for dell? i have inspiron 1420n with intel graphics. right now i have ubuntu 7.04 and windows vista installed on it. dvd playback works bad. on ubuntu i never got it to work right. i tried several different players and different configurations in them. tried vlc and lindvd. the only configuration that worked for me is windvd on a 32-bit windows vista. even with it some dvds won't play correctly with hardware acceleration fully enabled. what exactly do we do to make it work right?

on ubuntu 7.04 (like on other linux distributions) when i play dvd i notice a line as if i see frames change. looks kind of jumpy. also i saw here that the intel graphics does not work right with ubuntu 7.10 in 3d mode. what did you change and where do we get that distro?

I don't use Ubuntu, I use its big brother Debian GNU/Linux. But I would like to congratulate Dell for the great step of  bringing Ubuntu to the common man thru the Dell machines.

Though Ubuntu laptops are not available in India, I decided to support Dell and its initiatives like this by ordering a Dell Inspiron 1520, on which I hope I can easily install  Debian GNU/Linux without using any non-free components.

Excellent! I've always built my own desktops but for laptops a pre-installed  Linux (i.e. with working and tested drivers especially for power management) is a big deal. I own an old Latitude with Windows 2000 and Xubuntu and my next laptop will definitely be a Dell with Ubuntu pre-installed.

Thanks for the great leap forward.  It would be great if you could talk Microsoft into releasing a codec pack for xine that would enable us to view web sites that use those codecs.  They already released a codec for Mac.  Linux is not much different.  I think it would be easier than trying to get all the web developers to rebuild their web sites with ogg and vorbis.  We already have mp3 on realplayer, as well as real itself.

I have a question, actually.  Why is the 530 with Windows Vista $230 LESS ($130 after rebate) than the exact same 530 with the FREE OS???  Actually sounds like a rip-off of the Linux consumer.
I think Dell is doing a very good work, this is just a heads up.  Keep up the good work guys.

@Kevin

Remember that in Europe, since it's a very multilingual place, practically every country has different keyboard layouts. The French use the AZERTY layout, the Germans have their umlauts printed on theirs and the British have the pound sign. I do not believe any other European country uses one of these (and I KNOW Spain has its own layout and Poland uses the American layout). It's more or less OK for a desktop (but since you can't buy a desktop without a keyboard from Dell - I think! - you're still getting a useless keyboard), but a serious problem for a laptop.

And I believe I'm not the only one to say I'd rather not buy a computer with an unfamiliar keyboard layout.

I would like to show support for Dell's preloaded Linux offerings, and I understand the need to limit the number of systems available with the small market and additional testing required.

I heard the Vostro notebooks are nicer and more durable than the Inspirons, so when I get my next notebook it will be a Vostro.  If Dell isn't offering Ubuntu on them by that time, I will have to install it myself.  But that takes some credit away from your group.  Is there any way to show my support for Ubuntu on Dell if I have to do this?

Congratulations on your success so far.

I'm going to add my voice to the crowd asking what's the hold-up with selling Linux systems in Canada? I understand why something like Apple's iPhone isn't in Canada (the data rates are prohibitively expensive), but I don't get why Dell can't offer the same computers it's already selling here with Linux installed and no Microsoft tax.

Additional quote from Digg re DVD licensing:

"It's not just the DMCA and the issues surrounding CSS decryption. There are myriad patents that must be licensed in order to legally decode MPEG-2, AC3, etc. LinDVD takes care of this. The GStreamer plugins don't (and can't, since (L)GPL forbids licensing of this kind)."

What about the rest of the UK (Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales)? Are the Inspiron 530s with 7.10 only available in England or have you simply forgotten that England != UK? Saying 'England' when you mean the UK is like saying 'California' when you mean the USA - offensive to people who live in all the other parts of the country.

Sure. What an insult to the developers of Ubuntu, that one of the largest computer manufacturers is unable to test a new version of Ubuntu on a grand total of 2 machines in under 2 months.

How long did it take Dell to release Vista after it went "gold"?

I love dell's PC products.  They stand for quality.  However, now I am trying to start a business and I am hating their website and their help for servers.

http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/servers?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

I mean look at it.  It gives me NO indication as to what I need to be looking at.  I mean which one is best for me?  Even choosing one like the first one

http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/tower?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd

I mean all they got is fancy computer names.  Nothing that will help me decide what I need to be looking at.  I have to be looking at a lot of screens just to find what I need.

To top that off, they do not allow email contact with sales or a chat box.

I live in China (which recently turned off VOIP calls) so I am not going to call them.  I will be buying server(s) for starting the business in America.

I am sorry to say that I have been thoroughly disappointed with their website for the "business" side.

They really need a "chat" box instead of just a "allow us to call you".  Even if I was in America, sometimes it is inconvenient to talk on phone, chat box may work better.

Anyway, that is my gripe.

Thanks!

Hi Guys,

It is great that you are starting to offer DELL with Ubuntu. Unfortunately it was not available in Australia. I recently ordered DELL Inspiron 530 for my wife which came with  Vista Home Edition which ran like a dog and I decided that I would put Ubuntu 7.10 on it.

And I did it. However here are the issues I seems to have. I was wondering whether you all had similar issues at DELL Labs when you all were testing it.

1. I cannot install 3D effects (it says the PC is not i386 type)

2. I cannot install WINE (it says the PC is not i386 type)

3. I cannot install my brother printer 665CW via Network. Ubuntu identifies it, however doesn't want to print

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am an advocate of Open Source and would like to spread the word around about DELL/Ubuntu however I can only do that if I know for sure that people are able to install Ubuntu without any of the above issues. Specially 1.

thanks,

We bought an Inspiron with XP a few years old now and I'm interested in replacing my desktop with a notebook.  I have been running linux on my six year-old  desktop now for around 2-3 years.  As an end user with high click and point skills only, I have found the distro I am using - with a few relatively minor bugs that I can work around  is, overall, reliable and efficient.  I don't miss Windows at all and enjoy not having to purchase expensive add-ons such as the Office Suite and an Anti-virus /Firewall [it is built in and automatically updated daily].

I will not consider a Dell unless and until you make Linux distros available on your laptops.  I know that I could buy one and install the OS myself, but, as someone pointed out, there are some issues about some hardware support.

While I build my own systems mostly, due to your support for the linux community by offering Ubuntu I will definitely consider a Dell on my list of candidates for the next laptop I purchase. Ubuntu is amazing considering that it is available for free to anyone VS the $120-300 for the various flavors of Windows. And if configured correctly it is beautiful while also more secure and immune to viruses. So thanks for your willingness to go against the Microsoft monopoly, I applaud you for it.

To everyone that buys a Dell & loads Ubuntu please come to the Ubuntu forums and sign up so you can join the nicest OS community there is. If your having hardware problems with Ubuntu just PM me "nicedude" on the forum and I will try to help you solve your issues as most issues are solvable.

Hi Guys,

Finally I managed to fix my issue with the Ubuntu, it turns out to be that got nothing to do with the Ubuntu version or my hardware. It was to do with the Australian site I was getting the Ubuntu packages. Now I have fixed up the issues and I am now have a fully working Ubuntu desktop.

What more thanks to Brother website I also have the Brother Wireless printer and scanner working too. Wahooo !!!!

My question now is when is DELL going to release Ubuntu bundled DELL Desktops in Australia?

kindest regards,
